MY ROLE AT MIDLAND NAZ
As the Midland Nazarene Care Pastor I am SENT OUT into the community as an official representative of our church. In his book, "Pastoral Theology", Thomas Oden instructs us that the purpose of pastoral visitation is "to proclaim God's goodness amid our all-too-human struggles." Professor Oden adds, "the central task (of visitation is) embodying Christ to the world, mediating the love of God to humanity." Jesus Christ commanded all of us to love God & love people. Thus, I see my role as: following the model of Jesus Christ - GOING OUTSIDE the walls of our church to intentionally share GOD'S LOVE and HIS GOODNESS with people.
I look forward to connecting with people in meaningful conversations about their life and relationship with God!
IF I HAD MY DREAM VACATION
I'd explore the Alaskan wilderness.
IF I COULD DO A HOBBY FOR A LIVING
I enjoy many out-of-doors activities, especially with my family and close friends. Several years ago I dreamed of building and operating a "Wilderness Spiritual Retreat / Resort".
MY FAVORITE TEAM
Detroit Redwings. (In addition to the teams which I serve as Chaplain!)
MY FAVORITE MOVIE
It's a challenge to narrow this down to one! I am especially inspired by movies with the story line of second chances: "Seabiscuit", "Cinderella Man", "Saving Private Ryan", "Remember the Titans", "The Blind Side" and "Miracle".
MY FAVORITE BOOK
As I launched into my ministerial studies, in 2000, I discovered the essential spiritual discipline of studying. Obviously, the daily reading and devoted study of God's Word is my first priority! In addition to the Bible, I have a multitude of favorite books - way too many to list in this response. Nonetheless, there are a handful of books which I often return to for inspiration and instruction. For example, "Abiding in Christ", Andrew Murray; "Celebration of Discipline", Richard Foster; "Life in the Spirit", A.W. Tozer; and "What On Earth Am I Here For?", Rick Warren (previously titled as - "The Purpose Driven Life".
MY MOST REWARDING VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY
Being a member of a "Work & Witness Team" during the fall of 2001 to Comalapa, Mexico. Our team worked on the completion phase of a new church construction project. I will always remember the expressions of sincere joy and praise to God during worship with the people of that church.
Phyllis and I were married during our senior year (1981) at Spring Arbor College (now it is a University). Phyllis and I thank God for blessing us with three children, their spouses, and yes- our grandchildren! Erik & Lindsey live in Jackson, MI along with their daughter Abigail Louise! Danny & Barbara live in Auburn Hills, MI., with their daughter - Birgitta Belle. Amy & Jeremy Swaney live in Midland, MI., and are expecting their first child in August, 2017.
I was born in Flint, MI, to my wonderful, Christian parents - Carl & Helen Jacobson. When I was four years old, my father answered the call to join the faculty at Spring Arbor College (as it was becoming a four-year college). I lived in Spring Arbor, MI, through my freshman year at S.A.C. . I then attended Seattle Pacific University (WA) for my sophomore and half of my junior year. One of the milestone events of my life was receiving my Bachelor of Arts degree from my father during the 1982 graduation ceremony at Spring Arbor.
I am grateful for the 19 year management career with Meijer, Inc.,following my college graduation. I especially enjoyed three of those years working as a "Management Training Specialist" at the Meijer general office in Grand Rapids (MI). At age 30 I was selected to be the Store Director of the Meijer Store on Gratiot Road in Saginaw (MI). Ten years later, I experienced a unique, powerful and clear calling from God to commit the rest of my life to fully serving Him.
